Seabird plumage is so often black and white with subtle touches of colour. I decided to create linocuts for the stickers and poster/tote bag design I did for @birdlife_sa of Cape Gannets for Bird of the Year 2022. The graphic nature of the technique really seemed to suit these striking birds. The Great Guano Rush is the subject of the latest infographic I have done for BirdLife SA’s Bird of the year. This devastating practice of guano harvesting reached its height in the 1840s. ‘White Gold’ was scraped off the guano islands at astonishing speed and in enormous quantities, destroying seabird breeding habitat and upsetting the birds’breeding cycles. Fortunately this practice is no longer permitted thanks to the protection of these important seabird islands off the coast of Southern Africa. I feel very honoured to have been asked to create an artwork for a renowned Antarctic scientist, Phil Trathan, who is retiring from the British Antarctic Survey after a career of over 30 years. This retirement gift, commissioned by his colleagues, is a compilation of many of the species of wildlife that he has studied and the environment in which he focussed his research.
